In Tough Times, Try Tortoise: The Not-So-New Neutral
Call it the Year of the Tortoise: the year that New York women—speedy, combative, bargain-driven shoppers—finally slowed their credit card use to a crawl; and tortoiseshell, named for a lumbering, dwindling beast, bled downward from our sunglasses to color the rest of our wardrobes.
Late last week, the city’s beleaguered retail stores were awash in this mottled-honey hue. Designer Shoe Warehouse was selling tortoise ankle boots by Sergio Zelcer for $179.95. The popular boutique Poppy on Mott Street offered Nicole Romano tortoiseshell earrings for $182. Tory Burch had sold out of tortoiseshell clutches at $425. Fashion Web site Style.com was pushing a Sonya Rykiel leather belt with tortoiseshell bow ($217) as a holiday gift. read more »
Counter Offensives

In slumping economic times, the good news is that sales are omnipresent, starting weeks, even months, early, and continuing indefinitely. The week before Thanksgiving, nearly all of Fifth Avenue was already on 40 percent markdown—and that’s just what was advertised in the windows (many luxury retailers are quietly marking down entire inventories even more drastically for “friends and family”).
The bad news is that with recession sales come recession salespeople.
“Oh my gosh, I feel like I am being attacked when I walk down 57th Street,” said Stacey Bendet, owner and designer of Alice + Olivia. Recently, she said, “I walked into Dior and felt like honey in a swarm of bees. read more »
The Local: Code Red on Black Friday
Recession or not, when Erin Lima makes the trip from Philadelphia to New York City, “shopping is inevitable.”
“Every time you come here you have to,” she said, while browsing the handbag section of Bergdorf Goodman on Saturday with her husband in tow. “You can’t help yourself.”
The Limas and another couple got “the best deal ever” on a weekend at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Battery Park City, she said: $250 a night on a deluxe suite overlooking the park, with a cook-to-order breakfast and free drinks during cocktail hour included in the rate. “Can you stand it?” Ms. read more »
At Gucci Bash, Becki Newton Ponders the Economy; 'We're Just Trying to Be as Careful As Possible'
Last night at Fifth Avenue's three-story Gucci behemoth, the heels were treacherously high, the paparazzi were out in full force, the fur-lined suede coats were not on sale (but yours for just $5,960)—it felt like 2006!
The crowd was there to celebrate a new line of Gucci products that benefit UNICEF; the singer Rihanna stars in the ad campaign and was the evening's host (though after a brief appearance in the women's department, she departed with her bodyguard and entourage of seven for a private dinner in the Oak Room at the Plaza). Ugly Betty star Becki Newton and hubby Chris Diamantopoulos were both clad in head-to-toe Gucci and Ms. Newton was star-struck over Rihanna's (brief) presence.
"I'm still hung up on 'Umbrella'," she said. read more »

It's Chinatown! Knockoff Dealer's New Landlord Sues City for $8.5 M.

Trading, has since been booted from the premises, located at 196 Grand Street, and the landlord claims to have even removed the former tenant's secret stash room.
Yet, an ongoing court injunction prevents the owner from leasing out the now-vacant 400-square-foot space and may further cause the owner to default on his mortgage, according to court papers. read more »

Gucci Aims to Makes History with Biggest Store, Biggest Bash
Gucci is planning to open its largest store on Fifth Avenue and 56th Street in February, Women’s Wear Daily reports today. To mark the occasion in blow-out style is only fitting for the second goliath of global fashion brands. After all, it’s been an integral part of the hyper-provocative celebrity aesthetic since Tom Ford became its creative director in 1994. On February 6, Madonna and Gucci will join forces to throw a launch party, which will also serve as a benefit for the charities Raising Malawi and UNICEF.
Confirmed co-chairs at what’s already been billed Gucci’s “biggest event ever,” include the brand’s current creative director Frida Giannini, Salma Hayek and her fiancé, PPR chief executive François-Henri Pinault, Gwyneth Paltrow, Adrien Brody, Sting and Trudie Styler, Téa Leoni, Lucy Liu, Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher, London-based hedge fund mogul Arpad Busson and, for good measure, Columbia University professor Jeffrey Sachs.
"I am grateful that Gucci is joining forces with me to bring attention to a country with millions of children in desperate need of our help…Raising Malawi has already done tremendous work in helping these children," Madonna said of the upcoming Gucci benefit.
