The East Hampton police have reportedly been extra strict this summer trying to keep Main Street from looking like a street fair. For the Fourth of July, the Polo Ralph Lauren store wasn't allowed to give out snow cones, Dylan's Candy Bar couldn't install a soda funtain, and Tiffany's was barred from having an a cappela group perform. Can Uma Thurman and Kevin Spacey Save Planet Earth?

Tonight, Alicia Keys, Kylie Minogue, Annie Lennox and Melissa Etheridge are in Oslo, Norway, taking part in a concert honoring current Nobel Peace laureates Al Gore and the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Ms. Lennox, addressing a crowd at today’s event, asked: “Can celebrities save the world? It rankles. What kind of place are we in when people are looking to Hollywood or celebrities to save the world?”

Perhaps Uma Thurman and Kevin Spacey can help answer that question. After all, the two actors co-hosted the performance, which itself is meant to draw attention to what the former vice president calls a “planetary emergency.” Speaking at a press conference today, Ms. Thurman, 37, said, “The whole point is to raise awareness and communicate with everyone else in the world and share our concern for the planet.” She went on, “What we are hearing is that everyone needs to get very much involved with climate. It's coming to us. It's coming to a theater near us, very, very near us.” And Mr. Spacey, the cagey actor who currently oversees artistic affairs at London’s Old Vic theater, brought up an eco-friendly project that his playhouse is working on, called “Go for Green.” According to the 48-year-old thespian, the effort will culminate in a play that means to better educate young audiences on problems facing the environment. “I think that showing up at an event like this is important because there are going to be so many young people tuning in to this concert,” he said.  read more »

Charlize Theron's Hollywood Home Breached

One might think that with an outfit of paparazzi following Charlize Theron’s every move, thieves and robbers would steer clear of her well-monitored pad. But as fellow Hollywood leading ladies like Uma Thurman can attest, some people just don’t get it. At least that was the unfortunate case for the 32-year-old Monster star, whose privacy was recently violated in a major way. Police spokesperson Sara Faden has now confirmed that Ms. Theron’s Hollywood-area home was broken into last week. She could not say, however, if any of the Academy Award winner’s possessions had actually been taken. But considering the actress’ sky-high status and innumerable fans, a robbery-less break-in might be creepier than if some Wedgwood and a candle stick or two had been snatched. Amanda Silverman, Ms. Theron’s publicist, had not responded to press inquiries as of yesterday. Ms. Theron’s next film, Bill Maher’s Sleepwalking, opens on March, 14.

Uma Thurman’s alleged stalker, a 35-year-old man named Jack Jordan, today rejected a plea offer, which would have put him in a psychiatric facility for a stint. Apparently, if he had pleaded guilty, his felonious attempted coercion charge would have been reduced to a misdemeanor after he completed a year of mental treatment. (As we reported last month, Mr. Jordan has already pled not guilty.) Arrested in October for, among other spooky pranks, trying to hang out with the 37-year-old actress in her trailer on the set of a movie in Soho, Mr. Jordan will continue to shack up with his parents in Massachusetts. (The exact location of his whereabouts has not been disclosed.) According to the AP, the defendant’s attorney, George Vomvolakis, said his client would consider pleading guilty to a misdemeanor.

Last night, illustrious film director James Ivory was honored at the Trophée des Arts Gala in Gotham Hall—a fittingly cinematic space with soaring, ornamented ceilings and dreadful acoustics. Uma Thurman didn’t attend the black-tie dinner, but she did arrive just in time to give Mr. Ivory his award, which pays tribute to those who promote understanding between French and American people.

Like some kind of Old World potentate—surrounded by a blushing, frenzied team of guards, handlers and publicists—Ms. Thurman was whisked from her car, which was curiously made to first circle the block a couple of times, through central gilded doors, flung open only for her fast approach, and into the main hall. We tried to ask the 37-year-old actress, who was draped in flowing black cloth, a question, but she had little things hanging out of her ears (iPod earphones? cell phone headsets? the new earrings?), so she apparently couldn’t hear our frantic calls for a quote. The Kill Bill star did, however, say that she was “so cold."

Uma Thurman's Alleged Stalker Pleads Not Guilty

Uma Thurman’s alleged stalker of nearly two years, Jack Jordan, plead not guilty today in Manhattan’s state Supreme Court, where he was arraigned on an attempted coercion charge. Whoever is behind the nightmare is responsible for trying unsuccessfully to break into the actress’ trailer on the set of a movie in SoHo in 2005. According to authorities, Ms. Thurman’s unwelcome shadow-companion also sent her threatening correspondence and threatened to kill himself if he ever saw the Accidental Husband star, 37, with another man. Yeesh! If convicted, Mr. Jordan, a former psychiatric patient, could reportedly face up to four years in the slammer. Needless to say, Ms. Thurman will probably not bring him a cake with a file baked inside.
