Looking Up: Campbell

Temperamental supermodel Naomi Campbell was reportedly sentenced to 200 hours of community service this morning and ordered to pay about $5,000 in fines after pleading guilty to assaulting an airline pilot and two police officers in April.

Campbell, who received community service and anger management therapy for attacking her assistant with a cell phone last year (apparently it didn’t take), allegedly subjected British Airways Captain Miles Sutherland to a barrage of verbal abuse and accusations of racism after being told that some of her baggage had not made it onto the plane.

Campbell had faced a six-month jail term and fines of almost $10,000 for the incident.

I felt like such a turd on the night of Monday, June 2. “Turd’” is a very underused word. At some point soon I will dedicate my life to restoring it to popular usage. In the meantime permit me to elaborate on the circumstances that occasioned this unpleasant feeling.  read more »

Who knew supermodel Naomi Campbell, a relatively new contributing editor at British GQ, would land the Latin-America beat? For her first interview, Ms. Campbell sat down with Venezuelan president Hugo Chávez—but that, it now seems, was just the beginning.

Next up: a meeting with Fidel Castro, the increasingly reclusive aging leader of Cuba, which is in the works, according to WWD. (She’s already met the bearded bad boy, back in the 90s.) While she waits to firm up the details on that particular têt-à-têt, Ms. Campbell is working on securing a chitchat with Argentina’s newly elected female president, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner.

Considering rumors that the British-born phone-flinging fashionista began a love affair with Mr. Chavez following their meeting, her M.O., the fashion paper suggests, could be to help realize the politico’s vision for a united South America. All this comes, too, at a time when U.S. relations are becoming increasingly strained with Argentina.  read more »

Naomi Campbell Interviews Hugo Chavez For Brit GQ

Supermodel Naomi Campbell, British GQ’s new contributing editor, kicked things off at the magazine by interviewing Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez. In the four-page interview, Mr. Chavez talks about his fears that President George W. Bush wants to kill him, his dream to unite South America by 2020 and how the world is currently watching America’s decline.

Ms. Campbell does manage to keep the interview—which will appear in the February issue, on newsstands this Thursday—upbeat overall, reports WWD. Among other things, Ms. Campbell’s introduction reveals Mr. Chavez’s love for singing. “If he wasn’t the president, he’d be a very successful Latin singer,” writes Ms. Campbell, who calls the South American politico a “rebel angel,” later adding that of all the world’s leaders, Mr. Chavez thinks Fidel Castro is the most stylish. “[H]is uniform is impeccable … and his beard is elegant,” he says.

Marc Jacobs Looks to Richard Prince for New Louis Vuitton Design Concept

It seems Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton are spearheading a full-scale revival of the Amazonian supermodel frenzy from the 90’s. In this Style.com clip, Mr. Jacobs, 44, who became creative director of the French fashion label in 1997, explains the aesthetic behind Louis Vuitton’s Spring-Summer 2008 campaign.

According to Mr. Jacobs, the veritable king of cool around these and most other parts, it was his collaboration with artist Richard Prince that really formed the basis for the entire collection. “What about this idea of Louis Vuitton after dark?” Mr. Prince apparently inquired of the clothing macher, whose mental light bulb was then flipped.  read more »

How Haute Living Treats Guests

Our friends at Curbed already pointed out the "awkward photoshop job." But the awkwardness was not fully realized until diving into The Real Estate's archives.

This photo appeared in the promotional materials for Cipriani Club Residences. It was delivered in a handsome tote bag that was given out by children (dressed as old-fashioned paperboys), following Mary J. Blige's performance at 55 Wall Street.

Under the original photo the tag reads, "Cipriani Club member Naomi Campbell with Giuseppe Cipriani and guest."

Must be quite a letdown for our suave guest who always wears his sunglasses at night.  read more »
