What Bill O'Reilly Did for Hillary Clinton

Independents and Republicans are free to vote in next Tuesday’s Indiana Democratic primary – the latest do-or-die test for Hillary Clinton. And Independents and Republicans – along with a healthy dose of Archie Bunker Democrats and a scattering of masochistic liberals – also constitute the core of Bill O’Reilly audience. So, in a way, her appearance on his show Wednesday night was a logical exercise in voter outreach.

But that’s only if you ignore history. O’Reilly, whose Fox News program debuted (in a different time slot and with precious few viewers) way back in 1996, has spent the better part of the last decade telling his flock that Clinton and her husband are to be considered ideological and cultural enemies. And Clinton, the woman who defiantly lashed out against “a vast right-wing conspiracy” in 1998, mostly embraced that hostility, knowing that it only made her – and her husband – more popular within her own party.

And yet there she was on Wednesday, sitting down with the self-proclaimed “culture warrior” for a hastily arranged and wide-ranging interview that was taped in South Bend earlier in the day. O’Reilly’s introduction to the interview, which will air over two nights, pretty much explained the Clinton campaign’s rationale: The campaign, he said, contacted his staff on Monday morning with word that – after years of shunning him – she’d be happy to carve out an hour for him on Wednesday morning. Thus it was Clinton herself who sought a spot in “the no spin zone.”

The reason can be spelled out in two words: Reverend Wright.

O’Reilly called him “a loon” several times tonight and for months, along with other Fox News hosts, has feverishly highlighted the retired minister’s most inflammatory words, elevating Wright – and, by extension, Obama – onto a level of cultural enemy-hood in the O’Reilly universe that even the Clintons never approached. The Clinton campaign, remember, called O’Reilly on Monday, just as Wright was forcing his way onto the front page of every newspaper in the country.

If there was any doubt over the very specific purpose of Clinton’s visit, she erased it right away.

“Do you believe this Reverend Wright guy?” O’Reilly asked.

“I’m going to leave it up to the voters to decide,” Clinton replied.

Wright isn’t on the ballot. But her point was clear enough.

She went on: “I take offense at [Wright’s words]. I think it’s offensive and outrageous…it is part of just an atmosphere that we’re in today, where just all kinds of things are being said and people have to decide what they believe. And I sure don’t believe the U.S. government was behind AIDS.”

This went farther than Clinton has previously ventured. Weeks ago, she went out of her way to make clear that she would not have been a member of Wright’s church, but she mostly left Obama to sort out his own mess. That she picked O’Reilly’s forum to broadcast the explicit suggestion that voters should use Wright’s words to judge Obama speaks volumes.

After Clinton took a few more shots at Wright, O’Reilly expressed some backhanded sympathy for Obama, asserting that “his whole campaign has been derailed by some loony guy” and asked Clinton if she, too, felt sorry for her foe. Not surprisingly, she didn’t answer. At this point, O’Reilly was doing her work for her.

Of course, Clinton paid a price for going on, too. Having accomplished what she wanted to with the Wright question, she then had to deal with all manner of scattershot and self-absorbed questions from O’Reilly. He asked her if she was aware that she would “bankrupt the country with HillCare” and informed her that her plan would force him to pay for health care for “someone who’s taking heroin and drinking a bottle of gin a day.” He also demanded to know the details of his own personal tax bill under a Clinton presidency.

On these topics, the old battle lines that made O’Reilly and Clinton natural enemies for years were clear. Clinton defended herself spiritedly, bantering playfully with her inquisitor and even working sly praise for Ronald Reagan into one of her responses.

But this was all secondary. The purpose of Clinton’s visit wasn’t to win over O’Reilly on health care or taxes or energy policy. Her goal is merely to make sure that O’Reilly's audience – which doesn’t have a Republican primary to vote in these days – feels like she’s like them in a way that Obama isn’t.

It’s funny what a common enemy can do to even the most entrenched antagonists.

I think you missed, Kornhole, what O'Reilly first says at the beginning of his show, "the most watched news show on cable television." Tell me what candidate would not want to make an appearance?? O'Reilly now predicts Obama will have to come on his show, and I bet you he does.

Of course it's calculating. However, Dick Morris came on right afterwards and said that the primary is "over" and that Obama is going to be the nominee. It is purely mathematical now.

The simple fact is we don't believe Obama. Rev. Lovejoy was right, Obama is a politician. Obama can dissemble all he wants. But you can't tell us that in 20 years he didn't know his pastor had changed so radically, if indeed he did change.

Hillary is setting herself up for 2012 after an Obama defeat this year.

This is so delicious.

I think the democratic superdelagates and the rest of American people are smart enough to know that the Republican Party and the media are attempting to select the democratic of their choice. At first they thought Obama would be easy to beat. However, after seeing his ability to unite Americans and raise campaign funds, they have gone on the attack to make sure he does not face John McCain in November. Obama's campaign has done an awsome job in the face of their many opponents, Hill/Bill, Republican Party, CNN, Fox, and MSNBC.

HILLARY SAYS SHE DOES NOT UNDERSTAND HOW OBAMA ATTENDED REV. WRIGHT’S CHURCH FOR 20 YEARS AND YET DID NOT KNOW WHO REV. WRIGHT REALLY WAS?

WELL, I DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW HILLARY SLEPT IN THE SAME BED WITH BILL CLINTON YET DID NOT KNOW HE WAS HAVING A 12 YEAR SEXUAL AFFAIR WITH GENNIFER FLOWERS?

I, ALSO, DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW HILLARY WAS IN THE WHITE HOUSE WHILE BILL WAS HAVING SEX WITH MONICA LEWINSKY IN THE OVAL OFFICE YET SHE WAS NOT AWARE OF IT?

I CERTAINLY DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY HILLARY HAS STAYED WITH BILL CONSIDERING HIS WELL KNOWN, SERIAL PHILANDERING AND EMBARASSING SEXUAL ANTICS. --- EXCEPT FOR HER OWN POLITICAL GAIN.

HILLARY HAS NO CREDIBILITY ON HER "REV. WRIGHT" ISSUE.

Amen. I think that fair is fair.

If association with people who are destructive and divisive is a factor: consider that Bill was (unsuccessfully) impeached because of conduct of this type and because he did not tell the truth.

Hillary should stay mum on issues of moral turpitude. She stayed married to that guy and picked up his habits (Bosnia, Ireland, NAFTA, THE NEW ISSUE : CLOSING OF A TEXTILE FACTORY IN INDIANA AND OUTSOURCING TO THE CHINESE)instead of leading him to grace with integrity. By all accounts she was active in such areas as "bimbo eruption" suppression on the campaign trail over years. This was not isolated conduct.

The Clintons believe that they can dictate the terms of press coverage: no Monica,no impeachment, no infidelity, no library supporters, and now no Indiana factory closing!

You libs and your emmisaries are so confused, you don't know up from down, east from west, socialism from capitalism, good from bad. I feel sorry for you. An election you thought you should win will turn into a reaffirmation of Bush and his policies. Too bad for you and for the few remaining but dwindling normal Democrats.

seems the clintons did not have misgivings about rev. wright when he was invited to the white house prayer breakfast prior to the announcement of ken starr's investigation. it's time to unite the democratic party around the good of the country . down with the dlc , the clintons and their cohorts.

Amen, Steve. Hillary is brilliant. Imagine winning over both Richard Mellon Scaife and Bill O'Reilly, two of her worst enemies! She's the real Beacon of "Hope". She makes me almost believe that she can save Our Country. I despair when I reflect on what the Bush Administration has done to our financial and political standing. Hillary keeps surprising me. What a cockeyed optimist she is. She's one smart chick and would make a great President of the United States.

P.S. Did you see her standing next to the 6'5" Bill O'Reilly? Tiny little woman - pretty in pink. She withstood and parried his every attack. She's a fierce little Fighter. That is presidential timber. What a crime if the superdelegates deprive us of her presidency.

John Bibb (not verified) says:

Ms. Clinton looked nice and was courageous to answer Bill's questions. However, she shot herself in the foot (again!) by clearly restating her (and Obama's) socialist agendas. Higher taxes, confiscate the supposed oil companies windfall profits (10 cents a gallon to those that bring us our oil and gas--but 50 cents a gallon to state and federal governments). No mention of taking supply and demand actions (drill in ANWAR and off our coasts, build more nuclear power plants, stop the ethanol from corn scam, the non-energy bill scams, etc.) A few words about managing our way out of the energy crisis--think about it when we are soon paying $5 a gallon.

We have a female Jimmy Carter candidate and a black Jimmy Carter candidate. Go McCain--compare his background and theirs.

I don't watch the putz, but interestingly saw a clip on youtube that was rather eye opening. While he was quizzing her on rates regarding his own tax bill, she answered with 'God bless we rich people'. Ugh. She's really in touch with the blue collar folk, eh? Funny thing. I had watched the Larry King/Michael Moore interview, and he played a few clips of that very segment. The 'God bless we rich people' was apparently edited out. Interesting.

Hillary's Dumb Idea is Pandering ... (not verified) says:

Bloomberg praises Obama on gas tax

Posted: Thursday, May 01, 2008 1:07 PM
From WNBC's Jay DeDapper

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg weighed in on the summer gas tax holiday, arguing "the last thing we need to do is encourage people to drive." He praised Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver (first time since congestion pricing died a predictable death in Albany) and Barack Obama for opposing "one of the dumbest ideas" he says he's ever heard.

Another Hillary attempt at pandering to the ignorant.

Hillary was awesome on O'Reilly. His questions were as flat-out insulting as he could make them, and she just laughed and came back without giving any ground. They both looked like they were having fun. I thought some of his comments were good -- what is the antagonism to nuclear power, anyway? -- but her answers were good too. Best thing, she wasn't afraid of a challenge. I thought it was funny that on liberal blogs, people were whining about whether her appearance "legitimized" Fox, while on Fox itself, Dennis Miller criticized O'Reilly for "legitimizing" Hillary by talking to her!

An Iranian dissident blogger wrote this yesterday:

Many Iranians are obsessed with Barack Obama. If he goes to Iran, I'm sure he could fill Tehran's Azadi Stadium, which has a capacity of 100,000. To a large extent this is because of the nature of Obama's message about change and hope. Iranian people truly want to change their situation, get rid of decades of marginalization and restore their reputation in the world. They feel connected to his message of change. They are tired of living under the threat of economic sanctions and military attacks. Obama's remark about initiating a dialogue with Iran translated for many Iranians into hopes of normalizing the relationship between the countries and Iran rejoining the international community.

Hillary Clinton said this last week:

"I want the Iranians to know that if I'm the president, we will attack Iran," Sen. Clinton said. "In the next 10 years, during which they might foolishly consider launching an attack on Israel, we would be able to totally obliterate them."

I think that says it all. Yes its true, both candidates are trying to set up a big tent. One is built on an ideal vision, the other built on fear (3am; obliterate Iran) and spin. The fear tent is right out of the Rove playbook.

I'm so sick of the Democratic party.

Drier - "Former journalist Sidney Blumenthal has been widely credited with coining the term "vast right-wing conspiracy" used by Hillary Clinton in 1998 to describe the alliance of conservative media, think tanks, and political operatives that sought to destroy the Clinton White House where he worked as a high-level aide. A decade later, and now acting as a senior campaign advisor to Senator Clinton, Blumenthal is exploiting that same right-wing network to attack and discredit Barack Obama. And he's not hesitating to use the same sort of guilt-by-association tactics that have been the hallmark of the political right dating back to the McCarthy era."

Stein - "Peter Dreier, a professor at Occidental college, breaks the embargo on a series of off-the-record emails from Clinton advisor Sid Blumenthal -- her liaison, more or less, to the elite media -- whose efforts to quietly tar Obama have drawn the occasional raised eyebrow in the past."

I think the worst for Hillary was her explanation of the "windfall profits tax" for oil companies. Basically, she said "We will set a baseline, and anything over that we will take away from them."

First of all, who the hell is she to say that people (or corporations) can only make so much money. She is a Marxist, obviously, because that mentality does not exist in an open-market system.

And why stop at oil companies? What about other companies that charge outrageous prices with huge built-in profits, for their products, such as Starbucks, Nieman-Marcus, Mercedes Benz, etc.? Why should it stop at oil companies?

I have said before, Hillary is as close as you can get to a Communist without being in Havana. I just hope enough independents realize that (because the Dems don't care).

And what was the remark about "Archie Bunker Democrats" supposed to mean? That the core constituency of the Democratic party, blue-collar white people, are as racist now as they were 50 years ago, when the Dems started explicitly courting minorities? If that is what he is trying to imply, I agree 100%. That is why Obama "overpolls", no doubt about it.

Anonymous (not verified) says:

We listen to Rush every day ( in Vermont no less) and he has NEVER advocated riots of any kind. He wants the 2 Dems to destroy each other, and the Repubs can clean up the mess on voting day. He said yesterday that it is highly likely if they do keep going at it that the supers will draft some one else. Let's hope. These are 2 very flawed candidates. However, I will not join Operation Chaos - think it is a dumb idea. We want her gone NOW.

Anonymous (not verified) says:

Actually, Clinton was impeached. Impeachment is the vote to require a trial before the Senate. He was not removed from office as the Senate -- much to their disgrace -- did not vote to remove him.
