Labor Versus the State Senate

The executive director of the labor-backed Working Families party just released a statement reiterating his opposition to the property tax cap that was passed in the State Senate today, saying it was wrong for those senators to "side" with Governor David Paterson on the plan.

Dan Cantor, Executive Director of the Working Families Party said: "The Senate made the wrong choice today in siding with Governor Paterson on his tax cap plan that will badly hurt school children without cutting taxes.
Thankfully a majority of Senate and Assembly Democrats and leaders like Speaker Sheldon Silver are standing up for our public schools and for real property tax relief. The Assembly's supports full funding for our schools and providing real relief to middle class families and seniors who need it most."

I would like to post my comments on the unemployment laws that Senator Paterson approved. I thank you for the extension given. I am 53 years old and 2008 has been real gloom for me. I've been collecting unemployment since 2/08, I've had approximately 17 interviews as an Administrative Assistant for which I've work for 15 years and 2-date, I've not been pick for an "employment lottery" yes, that's what it's called now!

On June 12th, I tried to acquire part-time employment with Khols Department Store in Port Chester, NY. I had retail experience within retail so they asked me to come in for a overall review of the store and I did. Hearing nothing for 2 months, I was sent a check for $25.00 which covered my three hours of meeting with them, this was compensation for transportation and dinner (from 7:00pm - 10:00pm)I was told. On yesterday 8/8/08, I received a letter from the Department of Labor, Internal Security Unit (518-402-0171 stating that I received payment of $25 from Kohls and I did not report that I WORKED which I DID NOT WORK, they were taking $86.00 from my unemployment payment this coming week ending 8/10/08. This is not working, actually as a truth everyone is trying to "Steal, kill and destroy". How can you even make an attempt to get out of a struggle when the labor department won't even give you an opportunity. ANSWER THIS QUESTION, WHO WOULD FORFIT $86.00 OUT OF AN UNEMPLOYMENT CHECK AS A SINGLE MOTHER FOR $25??? If senator Paterson would like to give out miracles, how about allowing a single mother, head of household atleast acquire a part-time job to subsidize her unemployment. Another question, could he or anyone make ends meet with $335.00 a week as a single parent. Unemployment was established for short-term but as for myself and many single parents trying very hard to become employed, now it's a way of life oppose to law breaking opportunities!

Most people don't realize that the Unemployment system in New York was created to help business fill its labor needs. It is entirely funded by "contributions" from employers and each employer's rate is determined individually by its "account balance" which is a function of both the amount of "benefits" it causes to be paid versus its "contribution" and its payment history.

Employees do not contribute - it's illegal to even ask them to do so. Nevertheless, the perception exists that unemployment benefits are an entitlement.

While the poster may have been victimized by their byzantine rulebook, the Department's machinations are often cited by business as a disencentive to operate in New York.
