EMILY's List Trashes NARAL for Obama Endorsement

EMILY's List, which supports Hillary Clinton, reacts harshly to what it calls the "tremendously disrespectful" endorsement of Barack Obama by NARAL.

The following is a statement from EMILY’s List president Ellen R. Malcolm on NARAL’s endorsement in the Democratic presidential competition:

“I think it is tremendously disrespectful to Sen. Clinton - who held up the nomination of a FDA commissioner in order to force approval of Plan B and who spoke so eloquently during the Supreme Court nomination about the importance of protecting Roe vs. Wade - to not give her the courtesy to finish the final three weeks of the primary process. It certainly must be disconcerting for elected leaders who stand up for reproductive rights and expect the choice community will stand with them.”

Brava to Emily's List for saying what needed to be said and boos to NARAL for this back-stabbing endorsement. It doesn't speak well of them...crass, just crass.

If you ever have wondered why the Equal Rights Amendment failed, just ponder how SOME women would rather bicker than win.

swindon (not verified) says:

In making the endorsement NARAL noted the "growing rift between black voters and white female activists." I think it's good that NARAL is sensitive to that, especially given how Clinton's campaign has been dividing blacks and whites.

And Obama has been no less supportive of a woman's right to choose than Clinton and is therefore no less deserving of NARAL's endorsement.

Emily's List was established specifically to elect pro-choice WOMEN, which it's been terrifically successful in doing. But it's sad that Ellen Malcolm, who I respect, would paint NARAL's Obama endorsement as "tremendously disrespectful" of Clinton. It's not.

BrooklynGirl (not verified) says:

Well, perhaps if Hillary's "white women" supporters were not intent on voting for John "Swing the court right" McCain, Emily's complaint would be valid.

NARAL slips the knife in the back of one of their best supporters when she has been kicked down to the ground.

How brave, how honerable of them to stand up for???
She's gotta quit, she's gotta quit, she's beating his pants off. Didn't anybody tell her she can't win, she's beating the crap out of him, why won't she quit... She keeps winning, doean't she understand it's bad for him to have her beat him?

Hillary need to give Obama a testicle so they both will have two...
This is discraceful.

Emily's List promotes the dregs, like Chris Quinn, Virginia Fields and Hillary. When will they find candidates of quality?

Annoyed (not verified) says:

Disrespectful! Disrespectful! What respect?

Hillary Clinton lost most of my respect — and I daresay a good chunk of her self-respect — more than a decade ago when after her then 50-something husband committed adultry with a 22-year-old woman she stayed with him. AFTER Gennifer Flowers, AFTER Paula Jones and AFTER Lord knows how many other women.

Look, I'm sure Hillary's got her reasons for sticking it out with one of recent history's favorite American presidents (namely a child), but couldn't she have trotted out a trial separation, a public spat or something, ANYTHING, to show that women (and men for that matter) don't have to have to make their beds with dogs (and, yes, Bill Clinton behaved like a D-O-G, dog) to get ahead in America. Apparently, not.

So Ellen R. Malcom needs to go somewhere else and talk about somebody else when it comes to disrespect, because Hillary doesn't have any respect left to dis.

She's already lost, no way she can win unless she gets the supers to violate the popular vote and pledged delegate counts. If Pro-choicers really want to protect Roe V wade they should rally behind Obama. No disrespect to Hillary, but its over.

AS in NYC (not verified) says:

This statement shows that Ellen Malcolm values her candidate more than the values that Emily's list was created to protect. Sure, Hillary is a woman, but she has repeatedly shown that she will sell out her beliefs to win the Presidency, she'll surely sell out the pro-choice movement if she thought it would help her. Obama has repeatedly proven that he stands by his principles and has consistently proven his commitment to womens' reproductive rights.

Chris (not verified) says:

You are an idiot.

Monique (not verified) says:

You tell 'em Ellen! I was shocked and stunned.
Tremendously disrespectful is exactly right!

Monique (not verified) says:

No, Ellen needs to stay right here because she speaks of important things, like respect, integrity, and loyalty -- and you just want to stick your nose into someone else's personal life. Keep your nose in your own business, worry about your own man, and get a life!

Anonymous (not verified) says:

Oh please. Stop playing the gender card. An intelligent person votes, not on race or gender, but on CHARACTER. Hillary has none.

Maria Bonde (not verified) says:

NARAL could have waited until after the convention.

Too many folks vote in hopes of OUTLAWING abortion and make it THE ONLY ISSUE. That's very wrong.
We shouldn't go on one issue either,

A lot of us abortion rights folks are so upset that we are re-thinking
our own positions.
We want A QUALIFIED and EXPERIENCED person for President.
Let women not get pregnant in the first place!
Let them have to carry the babies to term!
The hell with NARAL!
Their cause isn't worth having a glib, ibexperienced, less qualified
person like Obama take over the white house.

Maria Bonde (not verified) says:

Hillary did the right thing.
She believes in marriage and had the patience to see her husband repent and mend.
Would you "divorce" one of your parents if they cheated?
They'd still be your parent.
No one is perfect. Bill Clinton had a major problem. Hopefully he's fixed it.
Hillary is not the one to blame.
