Chaos at the Chelsea! Hotel's Photo Party Erupts in Mayhem

Also on Friday, May 9, the Chelsea Hotel’s grand ballroom was opened for the first time in years, hung with more than 100 photographs of the ancient bohemian enclave and its many edgy inhabitants, including rockers Patti Smith and Dee Dee Ramone.
Celebrating its 125th anniversary, the legendary lodge recently saw its second management shake-up in less than a year amid stalled renovation plans and evictions of at least 15 tenants. Perhaps it’s unsurprising that hotel vice president, David Elder, who co-curated the exhibit with resident photographer Linda Troeller, was chased from the exhibit hall by a masked doppelgänger dressed in a hotel bathrobe. A stink bomb was also set off.
The next evening, on his way to a party celebrating the exhibit, Mr. Elder was fiercely confronted at the front desk by a tenant, Arthur Nash, himself a curator, who’d beaten the landlord in housing court only a week earlier. Mr. Elder fled to the hotel’s subterranean Star Lounge, where a bouncer stepped between them, allowing his escape into the bar. (“I never got physical with him or threatened to get physical,” Mr. Nash told the Transom later. Mr. Elder refused an interview.)
Later, after stepping outside briefly, the hotel exec returned to the party with a security guard after being doused from a balcony above. Staff called the cops. When they arrived, with stun guns drawn, firefighters were already there. Someone had called to complain about overcrowding inside.

I love the Chelsea Hotel....having stayed there in the 60s and was part of the rock scene....but more than that the magnificent place allowed us to be who we were....rockers, flower people, bikers, drag queens, and anyone else who wandered in were always welcome and greeted by "Max" The elevators were delightfully creaky and looking up or down through the unusual stairway was so avante`guard. There was always something going on there. I met Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Jimmy Hendrix, The Rolling Stones, soooo many and too numerous to recall. It was my home away from home and I miss it terrible. I play to visit it again sometime soon. Since I live in NJ its gonna take some doing with prices how they are now....back them a room only cost $10 a night...so I usually stayed several days. Wish I had a time machine so I could go back. And when my time on earth is through I hope I join my departed friends in that "Great Gig IN The Sky.....

To a european, it really is delightful to see that the stubborn,well-humoured,alternative-scene underdog kick-ass rebel-spirit is alive AND yes;kicking in N.Y. This is precicely what we all love(-d) about Your city, and it is of course the raison d'etre itself of Hotel Chelsea.
Let the evicted tenants back and bring back the Bards, as their accumulated insights probably is an essential financial asset to the business. Make sure the hotel continues to be the cultural engine-component it used to be.
All the best to you who strive to advocate humanity in the midst of short-term profit ideology. I'm really looking forw to staying at the hotel for 3 nights in late July, and thus be a small contributor to a long-term profitable business!
