Wayne Barrett Defends Quinn
Here’s Village Voice investigative reporter Wayne Barrett in City Hall today, saying that Christine Quinn shouldn’t necessarily be held responsible for the City Council's recent troubles.
Barrett, who is pretty familiar with the murky side of New York City politics, argues that legislative leaders aren’t normally held accountable when legislators misuse money.
“No one has ever blamed a legislative leader for that. I think it’s a totally new concept that Christine Quinn would be responsible for Kendall Stewart’s chief of staff,” said Barrett, referring to the indicted staffer and referencing Assemblyman Brian McLaughlin, and State Senators Pedro Espada and Efrain Gonzalez.
Barrett also says that it "remains to be seen" if Quinn will get a "free pass," since there are still questions about her own staff's conduct, what she knew about it, and when.
Wayne Barrett raises valid points. However, when AG Andrew Cuomo instituted minimal standards for the little piggies to get their member item pork, notice how many of the requests changed or simply went away. Why didn't the city and state pork have even minimal standards all along?
Nobody is holding Quinn responsible for the misuse of public funds by the two mooks on Stewart's staff. At least not yet.
The problem with Quinn is that she parked taxpayer money to be used later at her whim, for her own obscure political purposes. And she expects us to believe that she didn't know about the practice when she became Speaker -- a frankly ludicrous claim -- and that her own staff decided to commit fraud all on their own after she "discovered" the practice.
Mid-budget-year, when she was giving one organization or another money, where did she think the money came from?
well well, this is the same Barrett who gave Hevesi, Spitzer and his pal Roger Green a pass- get of jail free card. and he practically tongue kisses Bloomberg on NEw York One.
so why should we believe anything he says about Quinn?
he is washed up- nothing more than a has-been; a craven apologist for his friends. where is Newfield now that we need him?

I like the old Wayne Barrett who put corruption on display. Now he's like Ed Koch, formerly progressive turned apologist.
Like #1 said, no one is blaming Quinn for Stewart's lackies. Quinn's problem is what Quinn did and her lies about it.

Cheers to Wayne Barrett for (surprisingly) being the firs calm & rational commentator from the over-hyped, scandal obsessed media who have been making a Mt. Everest out of a problem considerably smaller than the proverbial molehill.

Where is the "fruad" you speak of? The City Council has been placing funds in holding accounts for decades. This MINISCULE, tiny, barely visible percentage of the City's budget is then used to fix problems with the adopted spending plan and, yes, God forbid, reward political allies of the Speaker. Just as the Mayor gives out vastly larger sums of expense and capital dollars to reward his buddies. We have a legislature composed of people eleceted from geographically discreet districts. They advocate for the needs of their communities and secure funding to meet those needs. You call it wastefull pork when you pontificate on a blog but I'm sure you're pretty damm happy when you kids school gets new computers, your park gets refurbished, your street is repaved, your mother's senior center gets some much needed cash.

I like this video, but I do not believe that the description of "Wanye Barrett defends Quinn" is an accurate description of the video. In the video, Barrett closes by saying we must wait and see what Quinn knew and when she knew it. He also says that Quinn should be held accountable for the fictitious aspects of the budget if she had knowledge.
A recent poll suggests that 52% of New Yorkers believe that Quinn is an absolute liar. She should be prosecuted as soon as possible. The poll indicates how a potential jury pool would likely render their verdict. Quinns aides are destroying Quinn with their horrible advice. No one believes that Quinn did not have knowledge of how approximately $17 million was "parked" under her control. Please watch the following video and judge for yourself, especially at 8:11 when Quinn says that she is not a target of a federal investigation, but does not answer whether she was told by authorities that she was not a target. As for Barrett, in time I'm sure he will change his mind. I am a student of Barrett and at one point in his life he liked Guiliani, but once he got to know how corrupt Guiliani was he started not to like the former Mayor. In time, Barrett will come to see how corrupt Quinn and her staff is:
