Are Mike and the Mad Dog About to Split Up?
The future of the city's best radio talk sports show ever, Mike and the Mad Dog, is in jeopardy. Newsday's sports media reporter, Neil Best, reported Sunday that the two oddball hosts of the show, Mike Francesa and Chris "Mad Dog" Russo, are on the verge of splitting up and it's unlikely that both will be on WFAN to celebrate the show's 19th anniversary this September. The reasons why aren't entirely clear, but apparently the two are fighting.
For sports fans, life without Mike and the Mad Dog is a little like imagining baseball without the Mets. Since the late 1980s, they've scored the biggest interviews and have had the most influential voices of any sports reporters or broadcasters in the city. For WFAN, the wound could run particularly deep: about year after losing their morning show, Imus in the Morning, they could lose their drive-home show too.
Chris Russo should be taken off the AIR period! I take Directv to get local NY sports news....not negative NY sports news, and I live in the South. We get enough Anti-Local sports here. NY should be above that!
Screw Francesa! He should move to Canada and spare us his narrow minded point of views (what else would you expect from an ignorant Yankee fan). He is a pretencious, self righteous, and self centered bafoon with no class (again, the definition of a true Yankee fan). Russo is a nut and a maniac, but atleast he's entertaining and has charisma! He also knows the meaning of "objective critisim" and does cry and sulk when he doesn't get his way. I've listened to them since thier first show in the 80's. Russo doesn't need Francessa, it's the complete opposite. Listening to Francesa is like watching old people eat; it just becomes another laborious task in life that nobody should have to endure. His personailty is just as antaseptic as the cosmetics of that hovel called the "House That Ruth Built". Adios fat boy! Don't let the door hit you in that aircraft carrier you call an "ass" on the way out!
Chris Russo is so much more entertaining than Francesa, who thinks he is god's gift to sports journalism. He's just an obnoxious yankee fan who is impossible to listen to pontificate. He treats listeners shabbily and can't be objective in any way. Russo will do fine without him, he is the life of the show and even though he doesn't come through as intelligent as Francesa, he is infinitely smarter and more objective. Must be a Met fan. A winning franchise like the Yankees attracts winners, and a losing franchise like the Mets, losers. And Anthony in Rocky Point, NY is clearly a loser.

As for the rest of you, Mike and Chris are the standard in sports talk. They were also the inovators of the genre which now includes shows like PTI, best damn sports show, mike and mike etc. etc.
I really do hope that they stay on together for a few more years.
Mike is all the bad things said here and it has nothing to do with being a Yankee fan. Anthony is obviously an extremely jealous Met fan who doesnt know that there is a whole world out there if he would just make it off that crappy island. By the way Ant, that hole built into the side of a junkyard you call home for the Mets is no Taj Mahal. Shea is where the urinals from The U.S. Open lead to. its amazing the things i read here.mike and criss has been together 19 years.while i dont always agree with mikes comments,or criss for that matter.they have proven over the years to be informative,knowledgeable and very entertaining.they complement each other because they are diffrent and you can always understand there views.i truly hope mike and the mad-dog continue to work together for years to come.if you wish to call one or the other self centerd or ignorant or critical it is your right to do so,but understand that all fans mets,yankees,giants,boston you name it fits that description as well.everyone has there opinions.its there job to express it on the air,and weather you agree with them or not you do listen. my advise to the critics turn the dial.and for those loyal to them like myself keep listening

LET MIKE& THE DOG GO. ITS HARD TO BELIEVE THAT A COMPLETE KNOW IT ALL AND A GUY WITH A SPEECH PROBLEM, HAS LASTED FOR 19 YEARS. AND COULD YOU BELIEVE 1.3& 1.4 MILLION.
mike has been the brains of the operation from day one and chris nothing but screaming brawn. mike francesa is the only host on wfan who knows his you know what from his elbow. he has been carrying that show for 19 years and i hope he returns in september either alone or with a new partner the station allows him to hand-pick.
Nothing in this show will be lost as long as "The Dog" is the one to leave. While I can listen to Mike Francesa daily, Russo quickly becomes "nails on the chalkboard". Francesa has been carrying Russo for years, and has 90% of the content of the show. Please Chris, go. You should take your own chance to stand alone.

these guys are yin and yang to each other, but even with their combined synergy it doesnt amount to anything close to boomer and carton or joe and evan. 1:30 is when i switch to 1050 espn because mike and the mad dog are horrible to listen to. mike's long, slow, boring rants about the yankees are almost as annoying as maddog's intro to the show. terrible voice for broadcasting, all the technology in the world in the 19 years they've been together they should figure out how to make maddog's voice sound like morgan freeman's.
Something may have happened to "Mike and The Mad Dog" about the same time as the Imus and the BB Gals incident. Imus kind of sucks post incident...and Mike and the Mad Dog may have lost something too. Could be the management decision making at WFAN is at the root. I like listening to the opinions of both Mike and the Dog and watch the show on YES. Both bring informed sporting knowledge and opinion to my personal sports enjoyment. This fan will continue to watch & listen -- and sure hope their sports talk team stays together beyond this apparent programming rough patch.

I found the show entertaining and being a Boston fan, that says something. Although not a real fan of either host, liked the way they worked together.
Why do all Mets fans hate the not only the yankees but all yankee fans too? Its actually disturbing. Take a poll of all mets fans whether they would rather win a world series or beat the yankees in interleague play and i'd say about 98% would say beat the yankees during interleague. I'm in the 2% by the way. You'd think we'd be more concerned about the crap team we put on the field everyday then what the yankees are up to. I think i'll become a dodgers fan b/c you people make me sick
