Comptroller Thompson's City Council Candidate

Comptroller Thompson's City Council Candidate

Here’s an invitation for a birthday party-fund-raiser for Jackson Heights, Queens, City Council candidate Alfonso Quiroz.

Quiroz is likely to face district leader Danny Dromm in the Democratic primary.

Which makes the special guest status at the event of City Comptroller and likely mayoral candidate Bill Thompson somewhat notable: it's one of the first times I’ve seen a prospective citywide Democratic candidate back a candidate who is expected to have a contested Democratic primary.

UPDATE: A reader reminded me of what is probably a motivating factor in Thompson's role here. His director of communications is Quiroz's treasurer (and boyfriend).

Also, one of Thompson's likely opponents in 2009, Christine Quinn, has known Quiroz's opponent for a number of years, since they were both community activists, according to a knowledgeable source. That may lead Quinn to actively support Danny Dromm.

Fly On The Wall (not verified) says:

As I understood it, Alfonso is looking to replace Danny as district leader when Danny runs for Council (i.e. they will not be running against each other in this cycle). Azi, do you have confirmation that Alfonso is running for Council? If not, you really should check ASAP and clarify this story.

Azi's Mom (not verified) says:

Alfonso and Danny don't live in the same district, fly. Danny would have to move to Alfonso's district to move for that seat (like he did only a few years ago when he moved to Jackson Heights to become district leader)...

Anastasia Beaverhausen (not verified) says:

There are two seats opening up in JH. The District Leadership in the 34th Assembly District (Dan is the DL in the 39th Assembly District)and the 25th Council Seat. Alfonso and Dan do not live in the same Assembly District. Azi's Mom is correct.

Azi's Dad (not verified) says:

Alfonso's boyfriend is Bill Thompson's press person. No wonder the favoritism!

Azi's Brother (not verified) says:

Alfonso has a great ass for 35.

Tipper (not verified) says:

All of you are overlooking a key element - these two aren't the only ones who will run, and is Sabini enters the race Danny will drop out quicker than trou at a brothel. Danny's notorious for flipflopping on his plans and will backoff when Sabini enters. Its a shame he's attacking Alfonso already but he's well known to publicly campaign against any other gay man seeking office in queens cause he wants to be the big gay dean. He's also a newcomer to the Heights, only moved in a few years ago but doesn't want many people to remember that since hes pitching himself as born-and-bred in the heights. Sabini is a much stronger contendor and will prevail against any other canidate in this race. John won't be nasty like Danny and people see him as a sincere guy.

Tipper's Fact Checker (not verified) says:

Sabini isn't going to run against Dromm-- he was at Danny's first fundraiser two weeks ago.

Also, Danny Dromm has lived in Jackson Heights for over fifteen years.

Tipper: Where is the evidence that Danny Dromm is attacking Alfonso? How is Danny Dromm nasty?

Tipper (not verified) says:

Sabini is savvy. He's smart and making all the right moves; and dont believe the spin on Danny's length of time living in the heights. there's ample proof about where he used to live till only a few years ago. Anyone who knows Danny privately talks about his bitterness towards anyone else who is gay and bright and how he's worked against them. He's not had nice things to say lately either about the lame duck councilwoman Helen Sears and has been criticizing her son because he wants to run too.

ConEd Sucks (not verified) says:

Is Mr. Thompson really supporting Con Ed's candidate, Alfonso Quiroz? That's disappointing. Maybe Mr. Thompson doesn't remember the blackout and how Con Ed spokespeople LIED to our community! Bill, you owe me a new refrigerator! Maybe you know a candidate who works for the transit authority you want to throw your support behind, too!

Tipper (not verified) says:

Check the facts. You'll see where Danny was living for quite some time - and not in district. As for Sabini he's smart and playing all his cards right. Hiram wont stand a chance against him next year and then it's all up to him whether he wants to pursue his council seat. the other candidates will drop like flies and danny will be the first out.

DeeDee (not verified) says:

I'd support Sabini anyday. It would be one big party! Dromm would put a damper on things, he's such a sourpuss.

Tipper's Fact Checker (not verified) says:

Is length of residence an important factor in running for office? Is Hillary Clinton any better or worse as our Senator for living in Westchester for mere months before the election? How long has Alfonso Quiroz lived in Jackson Heights?

Also, be more specific -- if you are going to say that someone has "not had nice things to say lately" about Helen Sears or her son, what did he say exactly? Don't be vague. Who is anyone?

finance major (not verified) says:

dromm's birthday fundraiser: queens party, 125 + hosts and pols including quinn + thompson;
quiroz's birthday fundraiser: manhattan party, one pol who happens to be his boyfriend's boss, and zero hosts.

do the math. quiroz will never keep up with dromm in the $$ chase even with matching funds. at this rate dromm will have 50k raised by year's end.

dromm's party (not verified) says:

Mark Green, Audrey Pfiefer and Joe Crowley were also in attendance @ Dromm's b-day bash.
