Ann Coulter, wearing black sunglasses, a white tank top and capri pants, was sitting on a couch in the Carlyle Hotel’s tea room. It was a few days before the publication of her book, If Democrats Had Any Brains, They’d Be Republicans.
I asked her if the war on terror was still the No. 1 issue.
“It’s the top nine of 10 issues. For Democrats, it’s about number 57. We’ll see, but I think Americans are smarter than we think. We think we know what Americans think as reflected in the mainstream media—well, that has been wrong so many times. But what they ought to know is that this is a far more dangerous war than the Cold War. … This enemy says, ‘We’re willing to die for our cause.’ They do commit suicides for their cause. So how do you deter someone like that? It’s not, ‘Can we deter them?’ It’s, ‘Do they have the technology?’ Because the moment they have it, they will use it. That’s terrifying. And you know who said that before he died, was Jerry Falwell. He said, Christians understand; we care about abortion and gay marriage and everything else, but we understand that the big issue is terrorism.”
So six years now without an attack on our soil?
“How about that? Nothing. We did finally get numbers this week: For years now the government hasn’t been releasing how many of them we’re killing. You think it’s just like this unending holocaust of Americans. At 3,000 dead, it’s the most tepid holocaust I’ve ever heard of. We’ve killed about 20,000 of them, of terrorists, of militants, of Al Qaeda members, and they’ve gotten a little over 3,000 of ours. That is where the war is being fought, in Iraq, that is where we are fighting Al Qaeda. Sorry we have to use your country, Iraqis, but you let Saddam come to power, ha-ha, and we are going to instill democracy in your country.”
How much blame does Bill Clinton deserve for 9/11?
“A lot. Jimmy Carter got the whole thing started, Bill Clinton let it build, build, build, build, build. He wouldn’t deal with it, because he had no credibility on deploying the military. He was a pot-smoking draft dodger, and so when he was presented with credible evidence that this or that country was behind a terrorist attack, he’d just have to look the other way: ‘No, don’t let me hear that. Call in Monica!’… Jimmy Carter gave Islamic craziness its first real foothold. There was no state-sponsored—they were just living in the dirt hating us until they had Iran. How did that happen? Because Americans forgot what it’s like to put a Democrat in charge of national security. Then we have eight years of Bill Clinton ignoring, ignoring, ignoring, ignoring—they’re ginning themselves up, Osama is saying, ‘You have six dead in Somalia and you pull out? We have boys lining up.’ Now this isn’t the Cold War, these aren’t sane but evil white men—these are crazy Islamists. This country—people are under the impression that it could never change, that this can be taken for granted, it can’t be taken away, and this is a terrifying time. I mean, it’s terrifying to think what could happen with a one-term Democrat, any of those Democrats.”
Why do some people believe the terrorist threat has been exaggerated?
“There’s an element in this country that is rooting against America. … These aren’t people who are thinking about America’s interests, so their behavior seems inexplicable to normal, patriotic Americans, but once you realize they are rooting against America, well then, they want to tell people there is no threat, there is no enemy, do nothing, don’t fight back. And they have a comfortable home in the Democratic Party.”
What are her thoughts on feminism?
“This whole feminist movement has nothing to do with women. Until Bill Clinton, if a 70-year-old boss called his 60-year-old secretary ‘honey,’ they’d be screaming about white male patriarchal oppression. But then they have an actual president molesting the help and credibly accused of raping women and suddenly we have a new definition of sexual harassment, to the point where Gloria Steinem wrote in The New York Times basically the ‘one free grope’ rule. You get one free grope and if the woman says no, then you’re not supposed to keep dropping your pants and saying ‘kiss it.’ But you’re allowed to drop your pants one time. … And with me they’ve dropped their principles on everything. They’re debating whether it’s okay for a liberal male to fantasize about raping me—that’s the state feminism has come to.”
Did she mean it recently when she said she wished there was a fatwa against her?
“Actually, I can’t get one. You can only get one if you’re a Muslim. And a Muslim friend of mine also pointed out to me, ‘They don’t particularly care in your case, because you’re just a girl—they just want to kill you.’” Next Page >

I have always voted straight Republican - NEVER AGAIN. I don't believe either party has the country's best interest in mind. All they care about is getting re-elected; and in the meantime the country is being turned upside down. Illegal immigration, out of control spending, etc. Now there are even Republicans who are caving on the National Healthcare debate. I never though I would live to see the day when Republicans would embrace socialism. It just kills me that there are people who think "Free" healthcare is actually going to be free. Where do these people think the government gets its money? The last thing I want is for the Government to do to healthcare what it has done to education. The only difference I see between the parties is that the Republicans are destroying this country just a little bit less than the democrats. I'm not wasting my vote on the lesser of two evils ever again - from now on, I'm voting for the Constitution Party.....God save America!!!

And anyone who doesn't understand the responsibility that Bill Clinton has to take for the Iraq war is either in serious denial, or really, really uninformed.

Rather, his "policy" (ignoring the threat) made our country so weak, that we are still trying to recover from it. We are in Iraq to defeat an enemy so emboldened as to attack us on our own soil - not once (9/11) but at least six times over the course of Clinton's office-sitting! The GOP is not admitting defeat; the liberal Democrats are foaming at the mouth for defeat! Why do you want to lose in Iraq? Why do you want a leader that cannot stand up for America?
You should read all of Ann's books, and educate yourself on these issues. Use multiple (valid) sources, and form your own opinion. (I'd recommend avoiding Media Matters, MSNBC, and NPR to start - they all were recently exposed in a quite red-faced attempt to defile conservative pundits by slicing their remarks totally out of context, blissfully unaware that the American public can now go to the source quite easily, to find the truth. My question is: if they would blatantly promote a lie so easily verified, how do they handle information whose source may not be so transparent? Hmmmmmm)
Meanwhile, take to heart the words of a great American satirist, Mark Twain: Best to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool, than to open it and remove all doubt!

I am constantly amazed at how in European democracies their governments can transition between Socialist parties, Green parties, Christian Democrat parties, Conservative parties without thinking that it will end their democracy. Yet here in America we have two parties that are amazingly similar and yet when you listen to the far left or the far right you'd think that if there is a party transition in government we might as well pack up and move to Canada because American democracy will die. It just goes to show that the political discourse in this country in exceedingly low and with people like Ann Coulter and Al Frankin we aren't going to get anywhere.

The default on mortgage rates is to a point the fault of the current administration and Congress. If the industry wasn't so heavily de-regulated this might not have happened. Don't tell me that Congress passed the laws and the Presidential administration is not at fault here, how many other laws and bills have they vetoed? I don't understand how someone that doesn't consider the war to be priority #1 is not a real patriotic American. The dollar is going to plummet and in the next 20 - 30 years the way things are going we will no longer be a Super Power. Everything is set for this to happen, if you look at history this is exactly what happened to the British pound. The Asian markets are going to take over primarily China and Japan. If you can't see this you are lying to yourself or you have no idea what is going on. So it's great that we are fighting this war on terror to save Democracy and our country but what kind of a country are we saving here? When the standard of living drops so far and the gap between the rich and the poor is so wide will this really be an America we have grown up in and are proud of? What people like Ann Coulter do what they do and there are plenty on the Left I know this it just helps to separate us as a country further and take our minds off what the real problems are. I am not a Democrat or a Republican I don't believe either one of these parties have the interest of the American people in mind. At this point I am hoping the secession groups make some ground. The Federal Government is letting us all down in the way the country is being managed.
What's most annoying to me about Ms. Coulter is that every now and then I agree with her--but she invariably states her positions in such an ignorant and malicious manner that she harms her cause whenever she happens to be right.

I thought her last book, Godless, was a great read. (the only one of her's that I read) I enjoy immensely whenever she appears on the O'Reilly show on Fox. She is able to make O'Reilly look like a fool simply by using body language and facial expressions. (since O'Reilly never gives anyone a chance to speak) And O'Reilly is so into himself he doesn't even notice. I love it. Ann seems to me to be just a very nice person with strong views (of which I agree with) and a propensity to share them with anyone, anywhere, and anytime unlike most of today's emasculated males. Someone has to stand up for whats right. Thank you Ann, for speaking for us.
