Avella: Anti-Carriage, Anti-Knacker

Queens Councilman and "longshot" mayoral candidate Tony Avella went on The Brian Lehrer show to defend the bill he will put to the City Council tomorrow, proposing a ban on horse-drawn carriages in New York City.

When a caller pointed out that if the ban went into affect the horses would be sent to slaughter houses, Avella conceded the point, and answered, “Although my bill doesn’t have it in now, we are working with a number of animal rights groups to make sure...the horses go to farms.”

How dare this media starved councilman try to say he ''would place these horses at farms''.These horses are OWNED by their rightful owners!Nobody has been accused of animal cruelty in our business, and all stables pass every inspection, the drivers pass every inspection on the street,so how can this phony claim he will replace our horses. This shows the leadership of a real ''winner''.He should look up the council member Bob Dryfoos, who attempted this cheap shot to unemploy NYC horse owners who make their living with their horses, and ended up in his own scandals. As the owner of a private stable in NYC with over 20 Draft Horses,we plan on staying and working in NYC,as we have for over 40 yrs, with a clean record, and plenty of support from genuine people. So to our opponents, these horses will NEVER BE IN YOUR HANDS,They are our Family and are not going to me ''poster children'' to generate donations for your empty causes.

Great Ms. Gerami, so you'll continue to send the horses to New Holland Auctions in PA where they are exposed to killer buyers and end up being slaughtered for food. It's good that they'll remain in your loving hands.

You idiot, Jeff... We dont do that that is a myth that dates back to the early 1900's. We have several sources that we use to place our horses for retirement. I am in charge of doing just that for our business, and I have personally places over 50 horses in the last 10 years. Would you like that names and contacts for the families and owners who now have these horses, or would you like to keep your eyes shut and your hands over your ears and believe everything those extremist animal rights freaks tell you?

To the response of ''Jeff',this is a typical statement by somebody who obviously has proven they don't have the slighest clue what they are saying. My horses Do not go to auctions, thankfully can well afford to keep them on my own farm that i own till i rehome them.AC4H,Another Chance 4 Horses ,a rescue in Bernville Pa can varify that i not only DONATE my horses to them to rehome, but i sponsor horses from them, and also obtain horses from them, rehab them and currently they are working in Central Pk.Because of my horse drawn carriage service,i can help save horses from slaughter and desperate situations. If you disapprove of this industry, thats your right,as its also my right to operate and enjoy my business and make a profit from it,[which seems to make these extremists jealous with anger that we make a living with our horses, that we own],but i can prove my facts, not totally fabricate lies to support your opinion.

Karin M (not verified) says:

These comments from those in the industry are typical: they are outright lies, and those in the industry know it very well. The horses don't have long working lives (4 years) and are sent to slaughter auction in New Holland, Pa. They don't get "vacations," contrary to what the owners always claim. As the city audit pointed out, the horses don't even get adequate water on the hottest of days. The innocent act that the owners put on whenever they appear on the television interviews really is insufficient to fool the public any longer. Their lies are despicable. People, read the audit.

Jeff (not verified) says:

OK, list all of the people that you have sent your hundreds, if not thousands, of horses to and we will verify it.

Maggie (not verified) says:

The banning of horse carriages will be a process. At present when the horses are done working on the streets, if they havent collapsed or been killed from the work, some are adopted out and some no doubt go to the killer buyers. Councilmember Avellas bill will work to ensure that those carriage horse owners who do not want to keep their horses would have the opportunity to have them adopted out to loving families.

What lies and half-truths the animal rights exptremists like to tell! i feel sorry for every single one of you. those owners are kind to their animals. Why do you beleive the crap others tell you. They only make things like that up to further their cause. they know its not true, and they are using gullable lumps like Jeff to expand!
